Azshara Mining Route: Rich Thorium, Black Lotus Spawns and Timbermaw (50–55)

Azshara is the zone most players fly over: few quests, long roads, steep cliffs and nobody around but a miner or two. That emptiness is why it pays. The cliffs around the Bay of Storms carry some of the densest Rich Thorium in Kalimdor, the zone is one of the few places where Black Lotus spawns at all, and the ruins between the veins hold naga and blood elves who drop Runecloth. This azshara thorium route is a loop for levels 50 to 55 on vanilla-era realms such as WoW Forever: south along the cliffs to the blood elf tower on the cape, back round the bay to the north shore, past the naga temple and the Timbermaw corner to the entrance.

Where and what you need

Azshara sits in the north-east of Kalimdor, reached by road from Ashenvale. Mobs run from the mid 40s at the western entrance to the mid 50s on the coasts, and the humanoids come in twos and threes, so 50 is comfortable for the western half and 52 or 53 for the whole loop. Alliance have a night elf outpost just inside the western border, Horde an orc camp in the north-west; both sell and repair, neither has an auction house.

Mining is the point. Small Thorium Veins open at about 245 skill and Rich Thorium at 275; arrive at 275 or the best nodes stay in the ground. Herbalism pairs with it almost perfectly: Purple Lotus and Sungrass want about 210 and 230, Golden Sansam 260, Dreamfoil 270, Mountain Silversage 280 and Black Lotus the full 300. One gathering skill works, but the lotus is the jackpot and needs maxed Herbalism, so a miner-herbalist is who this guide is written for.

Bring your biggest bags and a mount: a lap produces Thorium Ore, Mithril Ore, stone, gems, Runecloth, herbs and greens, and the cliff paths between stops are long and empty. Carry food for an hour and a stack of bandages; the naga and satyrs are casters and hit harder than their level suggests.

The route

The loop is a wide figure of eight: south first, then north, with the entrance as start and finish. On a mount, stopping for everything, it takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour.

  1. The western entrance. Start at your faction's camp by the Ashenvale road, empty your bags and follow the main road east. Thorium and mithril start on the rocks beside the road almost at once.
  2. The satyr ridge. Where the road bends, climb the ridge to its north. Haldarr satyrs camp in the ruins there in the high 40s; skirt the camp and work the ridge for Small Thorium, Sungrass and Golden Sansam.
  3. The naga ruins. Drop south-east to the ruined city on the south-western coast. Spitelash naga hold the terraces and drop Runecloth, Purple Lotus grows between the pillars, Rich Thorium sits on the cliffs above, and one of the zone's few Black Lotus spots tends to be on this stretch.
  4. Lake Mennar. Ride east to the lake in the south-centre. Highborne ghosts drift around the shore, slow and easy, with Runecloth and the odd green; Dreamfoil and Golden Sansam grow by the water.
  5. The southern cliffs. Follow the coast east along the cliff path toward the stone monument on the south shore. This is the richest thorium stretch in the zone, a line of Rich Thorium along the drop to the sea with Mountain Silversage on the ledges. The blue dragon that patrols the south is a raid boss, not a target.
  6. The blood elf tower. Continue to the tower on the far south-eastern cape. Blood elves in the low 50s guard it in pairs and drop Runecloth, greens and the odd blue. Clear the veins around its base, then turn back west along the inland road.
  7. The blood elf camp. Ride round the western end of the bay to its northern shore, where the blood elves keep a larger camp. Rich Thorium lines the cliffs on both sides of it, Dreamfoil grows in the hollows, and a second lotus spot is usually somewhere along this shore.
  8. The naga temple cliffs. Follow the north shore east to the ruined temple at the bay's mouth. Naga and makrura swarm the beach below and giants walk the headland; stay on the high path, where the thorium is the second-best run of the loop.
  9. The furbolg corner. Turn north-west and ride the long northern cliffs back toward the Timbermaw camp in the corner of the zone, taking veins and Mountain Silversage on the way. The furbolgs are tough, slow and drop nothing you want, so pass them and drop south to the entrance.

What you get

Source Drops and nodes Why it sells
Rich Thorium Veins (waypoints 5, 7, 8) Thorium Ore, Arcane Crystals, Azerothian Diamonds, Large Opals, Blue Sapphires Every 275-plus smith and engineer needs thorium; one Arcane Crystal is worth a plain hour
Small Thorium Veins and Mithril Deposits (waypoints 1, 2, 9) Thorium Ore, Mithril Ore, Truesilver now and then Steady stacks that always move
Black Lotus spots (waypoints 3 and 7, give or take) Black Lotus The flask herb; raiders buy every one
Ledges and hollows Mountain Silversage, Dreamfoil, Golden Sansam, Sungrass End-game flask, elixir and potion herbs, bought in stacks
Naga ruins and temple (waypoints 3, 8) Runecloth, greens, Purple Lotus with the odd Wildvine Runecloth goes to tailors and reputation grinders
Blood elves and Highborne ghosts (waypoints 4, 6, 7) Runecloth, greens, an occasional blue The most reliable loot in the zone, easy filler between nodes

Gold per hour

Honest numbers. A plain lap at 52 to 55 with 275 Mining and 300 Herbalism, selling ore and herbs on the auction house and vendoring the greys, comes to roughly 25 to 45 gold an hour on a populated realm. Thorium Ore is the base, Dreamfoil and Mountain Silversage add a few gold a lap, Runecloth a steady couple more. The lottery sits on top: a Black Lotus or an Arcane Crystal is worth tens of gold on its own, and a lap that finds both can be worth roughly 80 to 120.

What moves the figures is the price of thorium and crystals on your realm, which follows how many guilds are raiding; competition, because a second miner on the same loop halves your veins; and your own skill, since at 275 you still fail a share of Rich Thorium pulls. Do not count the lotus in the baseline: some weeks you find one every other lap, some weeks none.

Tips

  • Run the loop the same way every time and note where you found Black Lotus; the spawn points are few and fixed.
  • Mine the cliffs from the top. Most Rich Thorium sits on the edge of a drop, and from the ridge you see the node and whatever stands next to it.
  • Clear the mob on the vein, not the camp behind it. Satyrs, naga and blood elves all come in groups.
  • Match the tracker to the terrain: Find Minerals on the cliffs, Find Herbs in the ruins and around the lake.
  • Give the giants on the north shore and the wandering blue dragon a wide berth. Neither is a target at 55, and both end the lap.

Running it with ForeverBot

This loop lives in the Professions section. Tick Mining and Herbalism in the Skills panel, leave Remember nodes on so every vein and herb you find joins the loop, and keep Skip nodes above your skill ticked until Mining reaches 275, or the bot walks you to Rich Thorium you cannot open. In the Farming section, press Record loop once as you ride the nine waypoints, then put naga, blood elves and Highborne ghosts in the Targets list and leave satyrs, furbolgs and giants off it; the Target key only picks what you listed. Turn on Auto loot and Sell gray items, and keep Go to a vendor when bags are full and Repair at vendors ticked.

In Settings, set the Navigator's Route mode to safest so the arrow keeps to the cliff paths and away from the beach below the temple, and lower the Arrival radius a little, because veins on a ledge need a tight approach. The Eat below HP and Drink below mana sliders in the Leveling section's Combat and rest group apply here too; a caster-heavy zone is a reason to set them higher than usual. The Current status panel shows gold per hour as you go, the honest number to compare with the estimates above. Plans and the one-month option are on the pricing page.

FAQ

How many Black Lotus can I expect per hour in Azshara?

Fewer than you hope. The zone has a handful of spawn points, respawn is slow, and other herbalists check them too, so one every few laps is a good run and none in an evening is normal. Treat it as a bonus on top of the thorium, never as the plan.

Is Azshara better than Winterspring for thorium and lotus?

For Rich Thorium along a riding path, Azshara is denser and far quieter. Winterspring has the same herbs and lotus with a town and an auction house in the middle; the Winterspring farming route covers it, and the thorium ore mining route compares the ore zones.

Can I run this route at level 50 with 245 Mining?

You can run the western half: the satyr ridge, the naga ruins and the lake are fine at 50, and Small Thorium opens at about 245. The cape, the north shore and the temple cliffs are low to mid 50s with elites nearby, and every Rich Thorium vein stays closed until 275, so finish Mining elsewhere and come back at 52 or 53.
