Thorium Ore Mining Route Guide for Vanilla-Era Realms
A thorium ore mining route through six vanilla zones, Silithus to the Burning Steppes: small vs rich veins, where Arcane Crystals hide, honest gold per hour.
Thorium is the last ore of the vanilla game and the only one that still pays at level 60: every endgame smith and engineer burns through it, and the Arcane Crystals hidden in the veins are the only road to Arcanite. The catch is that no single zone holds enough veins for an evening. This thorium ore mining route strings six zones together instead: Silithus, Un'Goro Crater, Winterspring and Azshara on Kalimdor, then Eastern Plaguelands and the Burning Steppes across the sea, joined by flight points and one crossing. Run it as one long circuit or in halves, keep to the cliff bases where veins spawn, and the bags fill with ore, Dense Stone and the odd gem that pays for the whole trip.
Where and what you need
Thorium veins come in two kinds, and the difference decides where you can go. A Small Thorium Vein opens at 250 Mining and gives a handful of ore, two to four lumps on most realms, with an outside chance of a gem or some Dense Stone. A Rich Thorium Vein needs 275, gives roughly twice the ore, and is where most of the Star Rubies, Huge Emeralds, Azerothian Diamonds, Blue Sapphires, Large Opals and Arcane Crystals come from. Un'Goro, Winterspring, Azshara and Silithus are rich-vein country; Eastern Plaguelands mixes both kinds; the Burning Steppes is mostly small veins with Dark Iron Deposits between them.
- Level. 55 or higher for the full circuit. The veins do not care about your level, but the things beside them do: devilsaurs in Un'Goro, silithid swarms in Silithus, dragonkin in the Burning Steppes. At 50–54 take the Winterspring slopes and the quiet edges of Azshara and Eastern Plaguelands.
- Mining. 250 to start, 275 to open rich veins; the route carries you to 300 on its own. Artisan Mining is trained at 200 skill, Thorium Bars smelt from 250, and a mining pick lives in the bag.
- Mount. The loop is long. A mount at 40 makes it possible; an epic mount at 60 roughly doubles the veins you reach in an hour.
- Gear. Enough to survive a devilsaur noticing you and a pull of two cultists. Gear for escape, not for fighting: a snare, a speed cooldown, and on a PvP realm a set you do not mind losing.
- Bag space. Ore, stone and gems all stack, so bags fill slowly. Three empty 14-slot bags last a circuit if you sell at the goblin auction houses in Gadgetzan and Everlook on the way.
- Professions that pair. Blacksmithing and Engineering use the ore directly; Alchemy turns one Arcane Crystal and one Thorium Bar into an Arcanite Bar on a long cooldown. Herbalism shares the minimap with Find Minerals, so switch tracking on purpose.
The route

The circuit runs north through Kalimdor, crosses the sea, and ends in the Burning Steppes one flight from a capital auction house. The numbers match the map.
- Cenarion Hold, Silithus. Fly in. The hold sits in the middle of the zone with vendors, repairs and a flight master. Empty the bags and turn on Find Minerals before you mount.
- The Silithus ring. Ride the outer edge of the zone clockwise. Veins stand against the cliffs that wall Silithus in, and the richest clusters lie outside the three hives. Mine the hive outskirts, never the hive mouths: silithid come in swarms, and a cast interrupted three times is a vein lost.
- The Un'Goro crater walls. Leave Silithus by the pass in Un'Goro's south-western corner and follow the base of the cliffs clockwise. This is the densest rich-vein ground in the game. Skirt the tar pits in the north-west and Fire Plume Ridge in the centre; Marshal's Refuge in the north is the one safe camp.
- The Tanaris ramp. Climb out by the ramp in the north-east, ride to Gadgetzan and fly to Everlook. Sell at the neutral auction house first if the bags are heavy.
- Winterspring slopes. From Everlook ride west along the foot of the mountains above Frostsaber Rock, then south down the eastern ridge toward the frozen lake and back. Veins sit on the snowy shelves above the road; owlbeasts and frostsabers lose interest if you keep moving.
- Azshara cliffs. Fly to Valormok or Talrendis Point and ride the cliff bases along the northern coast, then the ruins in the middle of the zone. Most of Azshara's veins are rich, spread thin and shared with Black Lotus hunters; the Azshara Black Lotus and thorium route covers the zone on its own.
- Across the sea: Eastern Plaguelands. Take the zeppelin from Orgrimmar to the Undercity, or the boat from Theramore to Menethil Harbor, and fly to Light's Hope Chapel. Mine the hills north of the chapel and the ridge along the zone's northern edge. Veins are fewer here, but almost never contested.
- The Burning Steppes. Fly to Flame Crest or Morgan's Vigil and work the edges, west toward the Pillar of Ash and north-east to Dreadmaul Rock. Small Thorium Veins alternate with Dark Iron Deposits; take both, then fly to the capital to sell. The Burning Steppes Dark Iron guide goes deeper into that half.
What you get
| Source | Drops / nodes | Why it sells |
|---|---|---|
| Small Thorium Vein (Mining 250) | Two to four Thorium Ore, Dense Stone, now and then a gem | Every level 60 smith and engineer buys thorium by the stack; Dense Stone becomes sharpening stones, weightstones and blasting powder |
| Rich Thorium Vein (Mining 275) | Roughly twice the ore, the better gems, Arcane Crystal | The same buyers plus the gem market: Star Ruby, Blue Sapphire and Large Opal go into blacksmithing and engineering recipes |
| Arcane Crystal | Mostly from rich veins, rarely from small ones | Transmuted into Arcanite Bars for the best crafted weapons and engineering pets; usually the most expensive thing in your bag |
| Dark Iron Deposit (Burning Steppes) | Dark Iron Ore | Smelting it needs a long errand in Blackrock Depths, so miners who have done it buy ore rather than farm it |
| Azerothian Diamond, Huge Emerald | Rare drops from rich veins | Top-end crafting recipes; a single one can match an hour of ore |
| Mobs you kill on the way | Runecloth, greens, silver | Pays for repairs; never chase it, the ore is the job |
Gold per hour
Count the whole circuit, not the best ten minutes in Un'Goro. On a quiet realm with an epic mount the ore and stone alone come to roughly 30–60 gold an hour. Gems lift a good hour to roughly 50–90, and an Arcane Crystal, worth roughly 20–40 gold on most realms and found once every few hours of rich veins, decides whether an evening was average or excellent. Without an epic mount, or with one other miner on the same ring, expect roughly half.
Five things move those numbers. Competition is the biggest: a second miner on your ring halves the take, so change zones rather than race. Mount speed is the second, because the route is nine-tenths riding. The third is your realm's thorium price, which climbs when a new guild gears its smiths and sinks when an alchemist dumps bars. The fourth is luck with gems and crystals. The fifth is time lost to fights: every devilsaur you outrun is a vein you reach instead.
Tips
- Keep Find Minerals on and ride the cliff bases. Thorium spawns against walls, rims and ridges far more often than in the open.
- Never fight for a vein. The circuit has dozens; if someone is on one, the next is two minutes away.
- Below 275, skip rich veins instead of failing on them. Skill up on small veins in Eastern Plaguelands and the Burning Steppes, then come back for Un'Goro and Silithus.
- Clear whatever stands next to a vein before the cast. A single hit interrupts mining.
- Check whether ore or bars sell better on your realm before smelting; many buyers want raw ore for skill-ups.
- Sell Arcane Crystals one at a time on raid nights, when alchemists stock transmutes, and post ore in full stacks of 20.
- On a PvP realm Silithus and Eastern Plaguelands are contested ground with popular veins. Ride the ring off-peak and keep the hearthstone ready.
Running it with ForeverBot
Open the Professions section, tick Mining under Skills and leave Remember nodes on: every vein you ride past is logged, and the addon builds a short loop through the known nodes of the zone you are in, which is how a six-zone circuit should be run, one zone at a time. Keep Skip nodes above your skill checked until 275 so the loop ignores rich veins you cannot open yet, and read Nodes in zone, Next node and Nodes gathered in Current status to judge how dense a zone really is before you give it an hour. For the Silithus ring, where you want to dictate the path yourself, the Farming section's Record loop with Go to a vendor when bags are full does the same job.
In Settings set Route mode to safest, which keeps the arrow along the cliff bases rather than through hive mouths and ogre camps, lower Arrival radius to a few yards so a node on a shelf above you is not called done early, and leave Pick flight destination on for the hops between zones. Save one profile per zone, "Thorium – Silithus", "Thorium – Winterspring" and so on, and press Start when you land. Which plan includes the Professions section is listed on the pricing page.
FAQ
Can I run the thorium ore mining route at 250 Mining?
Yes, but only the small-vein half of it. Start in Eastern Plaguelands and the Burning Steppes, where small veins outnumber rich ones, and the skill climbs quickly to 275. Un'Goro and Silithus are wasted riding until rich veins open.
Should I smelt the ore into Thorium Bars?
Only if bars sell for more than ore on your realm, which changes week to week. Smelting takes time and many buyers want raw ore for their own skill-ups. Keep a few bars for Arcanite transmutes and sell the rest in whichever form pays more.
Where do Arcane Crystals come from?
Any thorium vein can hold one, but rich veins hold them far more often, which is why Un'Goro, Silithus and Winterspring are the crystal zones. There is no trick beyond mining more rich veins per hour; the crystal is a lottery ticket that comes with every node, and this route is built to hand you as many tickets as possible.
