Eastern Plaguelands Plaguebloom and Thorium Loop (53–60)
A hill-hugging eastern plaguelands farming loop for Plaguebloom and Thorium from Light's Hope Chapel: route map, gold per hour, Plaguehound packs to skip.
Eastern Plaguelands is the last zone most vanilla-era characters learn properly and the first one they go back to for money. The hills that wall the zone in on three sides are lined with Thorium veins, the dead fields below them grow Plaguebloom in quantities no other zone matches, and the flight point at Light's Hope Chapel drops you in the middle of it all. That is why "eastern plaguelands farming" is the search every fresh level 60 with Herbalism or Mining ends up typing. The catch is the company: Scourge stand on half the nodes and Plaguehound packs run the open ground between the hills. This guide gives you a loop that keeps the hills on one shoulder, honest numbers for what the gathering pays, and a ForeverBot setup that does the remembering for you.
Where and what you need
The zone spans levels 53 to 60 on 1.12-style realms. The western fields along the Thondroril River are the softest part; the north road toward Stratholme, Northdale and the Scarlet lands around Tyr's Hand are the hardest. The loop below lives in the eastern and northern half, so it is a full route from 56 and a southern-half route before that.
- Level. 56 for the whole loop, 58 if you want to ignore most adds. At 53–55 run waypoints 1, 7 and 8 only: the chapel, the Lake Mereldar shore and the road between them, where the undead sit at the bottom of the zone's band.
- Herbalism. 285 to pick Plaguebloom, which is the point of the trip. Golden Sansam opens at 260, Dreamfoil at 270 and Mountain Silversage at 280, so a 270 herbalist still finds plenty while the last fifteen points come in.
- Mining. 230 for Thorium Veins, 275 for Rich Thorium Veins. Smelting the ore takes a little more skill than digging it, which matters if you plan to sell bars rather than ore.
- Both at once. A character with Herbalism and Mining is the ideal runner, because the hills hold both. You can only track one at a time, so keep Find Herbs and Find Minerals side by side on your bar and swap whenever the ground changes from field to slope.
- Gear and class. Any class that can kill one level 57 undead without sitting down afterwards. Dungeon blues are plenty. A 100% mount is worth more than any single item here, because the loop is long and the packs are fast.
- Bag space. Herbs, ore and stone all stack to 20, but there are five herb types and three things that come out of a vein, so a full lap can take 20–30 slots. Empty everything at the chapel before you start.
The route

The loop runs clockwise from Light's Hope Chapel: north along the eastern hills, west along the north ridge, back through the centre past Blackwood Lake, down the canyon and around the southern lake, then home by road. The hills stay on your right hand for most of the lap, which is where the veins are. The numbers match the map.
- Light's Hope Chapel. Fly in, clear your bags at the Argent Dawn camp, buff and ride out of the camp heading north with the mountain wall on your right.
- The eastern hill foot. Follow the foot of the mountains north. Thorium Veins sit on the lower slopes and in the rock pockets; Plaguebloom grows on the strip of dead grass just below them. Fight the Scourge that stand on a node one at a time and leave the open fields to your left alone.
- Northdale. The north-eastern corner, where the hills bend west. It is the richest stretch of the loop for veins and shows Rich Thorium Veins more often than the rest. The troll ruins of Zul'Mashar lie to the west of it: do not drift into them.
- The north ridge and Northpass Tower. Ride west along the northern hills past the tower. Mountain Silversage shows up at the hill foot here, Plaguebloom in the open. Stop before the dense dead forest of Plaguewood; its ghouls come in clusters and nothing in it is worth the detour.
- Blackwood Lake. Turn south into the centre and reach the lake on its north shore, then follow the eastern shore. The waterline is thick with Plaguebloom and the odd Dreamfoil. The flats west and south of the lake are where Plaguehound packs run, so stay at the water's edge and keep moving.
- Eastwall Tower and the Pestilent Scar. Ride east to the tower, then south along the canyon. Veins sit where the hills break into the scar; pick them from the rim, never from the bottom, where you cannot see what is coming.
- Lake Mereldar. Come down the canyon onto the lake's eastern shore and circle it: east side down, south shore west, then back up the western and northern shore. Plaguebloom fields all the way round, slow undead, and Scarlet patrols near the walls of Tyr's Hand to the south-east. Stay on the shore and they stay on their road.
- Back to the chapel. Leave the north shore for the road and ride north-east to Light's Hope. Vendor the greys, bank or mail the stacks if your realm has a mailbox at the camp, and start again; by now the first veins have respawned.
What you get
| Source | Drops / nodes | Why it sells |
|---|---|---|
| Plaguebloom (the whole loop) | Plaguebloom | Goes into Elixir of the Mongoose, the melee raid staple, and several high-level protection and utility potions; demand never drops on a raiding realm |
| Mountain Silversage (hill foot, waypoints 2–4) | Mountain Silversage | Greater Arcane Elixir, Major Healing Potion and the Mongoose again; the rarest common herb of the loop and priced like it |
| Dreamfoil and Golden Sansam (lake shores) | Dreamfoil, Golden Sansam | Major Mana Potion and Major Healing Potion; every raiding alchemist buys them by the stack |
| Thorium Vein (slopes, waypoints 2, 3 and 6) | Thorium Ore, Dense Stone, occasional gems | Thorium Bars feed the top blacksmithing recipes; Dense Stone becomes sharpening stones and dynamite |
| Rich Thorium Vein (mostly Northdale) | More ore, better gem odds, a chance of an Arcane Crystal | One Arcane Crystal transmutes into an Arcanite Bar, the most wanted bar on any vanilla realm |
| Scourge standing on nodes | Runecloth, silver, greens, Scourgestones with the Argent Dawn trinket on | Runecloth sells to tailors and reputation grinders; Scourgestones turn into Argent Dawn reputation |
| Plaguehound packs | Rugged Leather for skinners | Skip them: fast, in groups, and not what you came for |
Gold per hour
Count a whole lap, not your best five minutes. A level 60 with both professions and a fast mount clears roughly 40–80 gold an hour here once the herbs and ore are sold on the auction house, with the high end coming from Arcane Crystals rather than from anything you can plan. Herbalism alone lands roughly at 30–55 and Mining alone roughly at 25–50, because the veins are further apart than the flowers. Raw coin and vendored greys from the Scourge you have to kill add roughly 5–10 on top.
Four things move those numbers. Competition first: Eastern Plaguelands is the most farmed herb zone at 60 on most realms, and one other gatherer on the loop roughly halves your nodes, so run it at odd hours or run it anticlockwise. Mount speed second: a 100% mount gets you roughly a third more nodes than a 60% one. Prices third: Plaguebloom and Thorium climb before raid nights and sink whenever a fresh wave of level 60 gatherers arrives. Skill last: below 275 Mining you walk past every Rich vein, and below 285 Herbalism you walk past the zone.
Tips
- Never dismount for a node with a Plaguehound pack in sight. They are fast and they come together; wait at the hill foot until they have run past.
- Keep the hills on one shoulder. Veins sit on slopes and in rock pockets; nothing worth mining spawns in the open fields.
- Kill the mob on the node before you gather. Half the Scourge in the zone stand on a flower, and an interrupted cast costs more time than a clean kill.
- Swap tracking at every change of ground: minerals on the slopes, herbs on the flats and shores.
- Rich Thorium Veins need 275 Mining. Below that, skip them rather than wasting the climb; ForeverBot can do the skipping for you.
- Bring your own food and bandages. The undead carry little of either, and the Scourge diseases tick for a while.
- Eastern Plaguelands is contested. On a PvP realm the north road and the Stratholme approach are the risky parts; the eastern hills are quiet.
If the loop gets crowded, the Tyr's Hand Scarlet Crusade farm uses the same flight point and needs no gathering skill, and the Thorium mining route covers the veins of the other high-level zones when you want ore alone.
Running it with ForeverBot
Open the Professions section and tick Herbalism and Mining in the Skills panel, leaving Remember nodes on: the addon stores every node you gather and builds a short loop through the known nodes of the zone, so the first lap by hand seeds everything the later laps use. Turn on Skip nodes above your skill if your Mining is under 275, so Rich Thorium Veins stop pulling the arrow uphill for nothing. The Current status panel in the same section counts the nodes and the gold per hour, which is the honest number to compare against the ranges above.
For the route itself, go to Farming, press Record loop and ride the eight waypoints once, closing the loop at the chapel. Use + Current target only for the Scourge that stand on nodes, never for Plaguehounds, and keep Go to a vendor when bags are full, Repair at vendors, Sell gray items, Auto loot and Buy food and water checked. In Settings set Route mode to safest so the arrow hugs the hill foot instead of cutting across the flats, widen Arrival radius a little, and press Save profile before Start. Which plan includes the Professions and Farming sections is laid out on the pricing page.
FAQ
What skill do I need for eastern plaguelands farming?
Herbalism 285 for Plaguebloom, 280 for Mountain Silversage, 270 for Dreamfoil and 260 for Golden Sansam. Mining 230 opens Thorium Veins and 275 the Rich ones. A 270 herbalist can start the loop and pick everything but Plaguebloom and Silversage while the last points come in.
Can I run this at level 53?
Only the southern half. At 53–55 stick to the chapel, the Lake Mereldar shore and the road between them, where the undead sit at the bottom of the zone's band, and leave Northdale and the north ridge until 56–57. The Plaguehound packs are the real danger, not the Scourge: they are fast and they never come alone.
Herbalism or Mining, which earns more here?
With one profession, Herbalism, because Plaguebloom is everywhere and veins are not. With both, far more than either, because the hills hold the ore and the strip below them holds the herbs, and a gatherer who swaps tracking at every slope collects both without changing the route.
