Fishing Gold Guide: Stonescale Eel, Firefin Snapper and Deviate Fish
A wow fishing gold guide for levels 20–60: Deviate Fish in the Barrens oases, Oily Blackmouth and Firefin pools by day, Stonescale Eel swarms after dark.
Most gold guides send you into a cave with a mace; this wow fishing gold guide sends you to the water's edge with a pole. On vanilla-era realms such as WoW Forever the alchemists who brew flasks and protection potions for raid night cannot work without fish oils, and the fish behind those oils come almost entirely from coastal pools: Oily Blackmouth schools on the low shores, Firefin Snapper schools in warmer water, and Stonescale Eel swarms that only surface after dark. Add the Deviate Fish of the Barrens oases, which turns anyone into a pirate for a few minutes and sells purely for the fun of it, and you have a ladder of fishing spots that carries a character from level 20 to 60 without ever fighting the herb farmers for a node. Nothing here hits hard, nothing respawns on a timer you have to race for, and most of it works with a cup of tea in the other hand.
Where and what you need
The ladder follows your character level because the shores do. The Barrens oases are a comfortable stop at 20–25, the Merchant Coast outside Ratchet suits the mid-twenties, Stranglethorn's beaches are 30–45 territory, and Tanaris, Feralas and Azshara ask for 45–60 if you want to walk between pools without a raptor or a naga on your back. Pools themselves do not care about character level, only about Fishing skill, so a lower character can poach the higher coasts as long as it keeps its feet in the water and its eyes on the patrols.
Fishing is the only profession you need. Apprentice and Journeyman come from any fishing trainer; the Expert book is sold in Booty Bay once you are roughly at skill 125, and Artisan is a short quest chain in Dustwallow Marsh at roughly 225. Cooking is optional but pays twice: Savory Deviate Delight is a cooking recipe that drops from creatures in the Barrens and is the reason Deviate Fish sell at all, and the rest of your catch becomes free food for levelling. Alchemy is the real multiplier. An alchemist turns raw eels, snappers and blackmouth into Stonescale Oil, Fire Oil and Blackmouth Oil and sells the ingredient the buyer actually wants instead of the fish the buyer has to process. Engineers can also make their own Aquadynamic Fish Attractors, the strongest lure in the game.
Gear is cheap. Any pole works; a Strong Fishing Pole from the fishing vendors adds a little skill, the Big Iron Fishing Pole from the shellfish traps in Desolace adds more, and the Artisan quest reward is the best of the lot. Lures matter far more than the pole: Shiny Baubles, Nightcrawlers, Bright Baubles and Aquadynamic Fish Attractors each last roughly ten minutes and add from +25 to +100 skill. As a rough guide, the Barrens oases need well under 100 skill, the Stranglethorn coast roughly 130–150, Tanaris and Feralas roughly 200–225, and the bays of Azshara roughly 300; lures bridge every one of those gaps. Bring four bags of 14 or 16 slots. Fish stack to twenty, but pools also throw in clams, trunks and vendor junk, and the walk back to a merchant is the biggest single cost of the whole route.
The route

This is a ladder rather than a loop. Take the first four points in your twenties, add the fifth in your thirties, and move to the last three once you can walk the high coasts. The numbers on the map match the list.
- The Forgotten Pools, northern Barrens. From the Crossroads take the road north-west; the oasis sits in a hollow west of the road, before the climb towards Stonetalon. Deviate Fish Schools ring the pool. Walk the bank clockwise and recast on each school until it is empty.
- Lushwater Oasis, central Barrens. Follow the road south-west from the Crossroads towards the hill of the Wailing Caverns; the oasis lies at its foot. More Deviate schools, and the caverns themselves hold Deviate Fish if the surface is fished out.
- The Stagnant Oasis, southern Barrens. Ride south along the main road and turn east off it near the first big plateau. The third set of Deviate schools, usually the least contested because it is the longest walk.
- The Merchant Coast outside Ratchet. Take the road east to the harbour and drop onto the beach. Oily Blackmouth Schools dot the shoreline on both sides of the town, and Ratchet has a bank, a mailbox and vendors for the junk.
- Booty Bay and the Stranglethorn beaches. Board the boat from Ratchet to Booty Bay and buy Expert Fishing. Work the sand north of the Bay and the long Wild Shore up towards Grom'gol: Firefin Snapper Schools by day, Oily Blackmouth at any hour, and the first Stonescale Eel swarms after dark.
- Tanaris, Steamwheedle Port and the eastern coves. Take the boat back to Ratchet, fly to Gadgetzan and ride east to the port. Follow the coast south from cove to cove. Firefin by day, Stonescale swarms by night, and Floating Wreckage in between.
- Feralas, the Forgotten Coast. Fly to Feathermoon Stronghold or Camp Mojache and ride to the western shore. The long beach below the island fort has Firefin and Stonescale pools spread thinly, so this is the leg for a mount and a stack of lures.
- Azshara, the Bay of Storms. Fly to Talrendis Point or Valormok, ride east and climb down to the coves. This is the richest night coast on the ladder, with Stonescale Eel swarms every few hundred yards; when the bags fill, hearth out.
What you get
| Source | Drops / nodes | Why it sells |
|---|---|---|
| Deviate Fish Schools (Barrens oases, Wailing Caverns) | Deviate Fish | Savory Deviate Delight turns the eater into a pirate or a ninja; a party trick that sells in every capital city, every week |
| Oily Blackmouth Schools (Merchant Coast, Westfall, Stranglethorn) | Oily Blackmouth | Blackmouth Oil goes into Free Action Potion and Swim Speed Potion, both PvP staples |
| Firefin Snapper Schools (Stranglethorn, Tanaris, Feralas, Azshara) | Firefin Snapper | Fire Oil feeds Fire Protection Potions and Elixir of Greater Firepower for fire-heavy raids |
| Stonescale Eel Swarms (night only, the high coasts) | Stonescale Eel | Stonescale Oil is the base of Flask of the Titans, Greater Stoneshield Potion and Elixir of Superior Defense; tanks buy by the stack |
| Floating Wreckage (the same coasts) | Iron Bound and Mithril Bound Trunks | A trunk holds cloth, potions and the odd green item; the mithril ones are a lottery ticket worth opening |
| Open water between pools | Common fish, clams | Cooked food sells slowly, but it is free rations and free Cooking skill |
Gold per hour
Fishing is steady rather than spectacular, so treat these as rough ranges from a realm with a healthy raid scene. The Barrens oases return roughly 3–8 gold per hour in Deviate Fish, with the upper end only on realms where the recipe is rare and the pirate parties are popular. The Merchant Coast and Stranglethorn blackmouth and snapper run roughly 4–10 gold per hour. A night shift on the high coasts is the real money: Stonescale Eel swarms in Tanaris, Feralas and especially Azshara bring roughly 8–15 gold per hour raw, and more if an alchemist converts the eels into oil before they hit the auction house.
Four things move those numbers. The server clock decides whether the eels exist at all. Competition decides whether the pools are there when you arrive, and a coast with one other fisher is worth half a coast with none. Lure uptime decides how many casts land a fish instead of a miss. And demand decides the price: eel and snapper prices climb in the days before a raid reset and sag the morning after, so the patient seller lists on Monday and the impatient one lists on Thursday.
Tips
- Fish the clock. Stonescale Eel swarms appear only after dark on the server clock, roughly between six in the evening and six in the morning; Firefin schools are a daytime habit. Save the night hours for the eels.
- Pools empty after a handful of catches, so never stand still. Walk the shoreline, cast at the next pool as you arrive, and keep the whole coast moving under you.
- Lure uptime beats pole upgrades. Keep one lure on at all times and reapply the moment it runs out; Bright Baubles are the sweet spot between price and skill.
- Learn the cliffs. Azshara's coves and the Tanaris coast are hemmed in by rock; it is usually faster to swim around a headland than to climb back up and ride around it.
- Sell what the buyer wants. Raw fish go cheap and oils go to raiders, so a guild alchemist who converts for a cut makes every stack worth more.
- Post Deviate Fish in fives. Nobody wants twenty pirate parties at once, and small stacks sell every day instead of once a week.
- Set your hearth to Booty Bay or Gadgetzan. A neutral auction house, a mailbox and a fishing vendor stand within a few steps of each other, and both towns sit on the route.
Running it with ForeverBot
Casting is yours; the walking is the bot's. Open the Farming section, run the shoreline of a coast once with Record loop, and the loop becomes a route the navigator arrow leads you round, pool to pool, while the Gold and Gold/hour counters tell you honestly which coast pays. Tick Go to a vendor when bags are full, Sell gray items and Repair at vendors so the junk from the wreckage never costs you a walk, and set Route mode to safest in Settings → Navigator when you record a coast like Azshara, where the shortest line runs through a naga camp. Arrival radius at a few yards keeps the arrow from pulling you off the water's edge, and Sound cues in Accessibility tell you when the next loop point is reached without looking away from the bobber.
The Professions section is built for Mining, Herbalism and Skinning rather than pools, so pair the coasts with a gathering skill: tick Remember nodes and Skip nodes above your skill, and the addon builds a short loop through the known herb and ore nodes between your pools, which is how the Stranglethorn beach doubles as a herb run. For the long legs between coasts, Use flight paths and Hearthstone in the Leveling section cut the travel, and the Dungeons section lists Wailing Caverns with a route to its entrance for an indoor Deviate Fish session on a rainy night. Set the character up once with the first-run setup guide, save it with Save profile, and the whole ladder is one Start button away. Pricing for the full version is on the main page; the Stranglethorn leg pairs well with the Stranglethorn Vale skinning route.
FAQ
Do I need high Fishing skill before the first stop?
No. The Barrens oases can be fished with a skill well under 100, and the Deviate schools are the easiest pools in the game to spot. Level Fishing on the oases and the Merchant Coast, then buy Expert Fishing in Booty Bay when you reach the Stranglethorn leg.
Why are there no eels on the coast?
Almost always because it is daytime on the server clock. Stonescale Eel swarms only appear after dark, and in daylight the same spots hold Firefin schools or nothing at all. Check the clock, fish the snappers until evening, and the swarms come back with the dark.
Is fishing better gold than herb farming?
Per hour, usually not; a good herb loop such as the Azshara Black Lotus and thorium route beats a fishing coast on most nights. Fishing wins on reliability: no one can steal a pool you are already standing in, it works at any level, and oils sell to raiders every single week regardless of what the herb prices are doing.
